2011 QEW Fall Annual Meeting & Gathering
The 2011 Steering Committee Annual Meeting & Gathering
Here's more about the setting and format for the QEW Annual Meeting & Gathering
at the Cenacle Conference & Retreat Center in Chicago, Ill.
513 Fullerton Parkway
Chicago, IL 60614
October 20-October 23, 2011
The Cenacle Conference & Retreat Center is located in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago, near the shore of Lake Michigan and within a short walking distance of many cultural opportunities, restaurants, and natural areas. The Center is located near public transportation lines and is easily accessible by bus from the airport, train station, or bus station. Because of its central location, most participants handle their own transportation, but QEW staff are available to assist where there are special needs.
The Cenacle facilities are very comfortable, and the staff are always very friendly and helpful. Family-style dining features vegetarian dishes, with options for meat for those who wish to make special arrangements with the kitchen.
The format of the QEW Annual Meeting is a combination of plenary sessions for business or discussing vital issues of the day. Three invited speakers will talk on the theme of Food and Biodiversity. There will be scheduled times for business sessions of standing committees and working groups. There will be scheduled periods of R & R, which may include nature walks, naps, or informal chats, in addition to scheduled bird walks, early-morning worship, and evening fellowship with singing and videos. Some attenders bring literature and displays on various Earthcare-related issues.
Typically from 60 to 90 people come to the QEW annual meeting, including appointed Yearly Meeting Representatives, at-large Steering Committee members, and interested people from the area and local Friends meetings. A special effort is being made to involve more young Friends in the work of QEW.
For many Friends the QEW Annual Meeting is an important way to reconnect with a "spiritual community" that shares their deep concerns and values and re-energizes them for the work they do back home. They look forward to networking with other Friends from their regions, as well as those who share their particular interests in Earthcare.
