Steering Committee Annual Meeting & Gathering

Activist Tools for a Planet in Peril: The Case of Water

Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center, Houston, Texas—
October 28-November 1, 2010

GENERAL INFORMATION: Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center is on beautiful grounds near city bus service. Our time together begins with dinner on Thursday and ends with lunch on Monday. The pricing options include staying from dinner Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Our activism will begin Thursday evening with a letter-writing campaign that will continue through the weekend. The Friday night presentation by Jim Blackburn will begin after dinner. Every morning we’ll have the option of a bird walk. All through the weekend QEW will periodically conduct its annual business interspersed with presenters and outdoor time. Sunday morning will include open worship. Sunday evening we will have a party to celebrate the years of service by retiring Ruah Swennerfelt and possibly welcome a new General Secretary. Monday morning we will have options of activism or visiting the innovative Live Oak Friends Meetinghouse.

ARRIVAL TIME: Registration begins after 4 p.m. on Thursday.

REGISTRATION DUE DATE: We MUST have your registration information in the QEW office by September 30. No late registrations can be accepted. The retreat center requires final numbers shortly after that, and we need a few days to process the information.

COST & ACCOMMODATIONS: Room & board costs vary according how long you stay. There is a discount for staying three or four days. There are no other accommodations possible. There are many single rooms available. The registration fee covers the costs of preparing for the meeting and of purchasing carbon offsets for our travel and meeting greenhouse gas emissions. (See the enclosed registration form for prices.) Bring your own unscented toiletries. (We attempt to provide a chemical-free atmosphere for all our meetings.) If you are bringing young children, contact the QEW office and we’ll try to create a special fee structure. There are some limited travel funds available to help Steering Committee members. Please ask for a form from the QEW office by August 1.

YOUNG ADULT FRIENDS: We encourage Young Adult Friends (ages 20 to 35) to attend. There is a special scholarship of up to $150 for Young Adult Friends who have never attended a QEW meeting.

REFUNDS: $50 is non-refundable. The remaining amount of your registration fee is refundable until September 30 and 50% (after the $50 is deducted) until October 15. After that, it is non-refundable.

SPECIAL NEEDS: All meals are vegetarian. Please indicate on the registration form if you have special food needs or allergies. We can’t accommodate all special needs, but will try to.

PERSONAL CARBON OFFSETS: QEW contributes $300 to the Mini-Grant Fund to offset the carbon costs of holding meetings. Individuals can choose to offset their travel carbon costs with a contribution to the Mini-Grant Fund as well.

TRANSPORTATION:

By Train: Amtrak has service to Houston with a bus link ( www.amtrak.com ).

By Bus: Greyhound offers service to Houston ( www.greyhound.com ).

By Air: You can book to either of two airports in the Houston area—Intercontinental (Bush) or Hobby. Local Friends say if you can arrive at Hobby it’s closer and easier. However, if you are renting a car, Intercontinental is just as easy.

The conference center is near a city bus line. http://ridemetro.org/ has the schedules by number. After registering, you will receive metro information to look up times for the bus schedule. It’s possible that several people can share taxis or from the airports use the Super Shuttle, which will bring you right to the retreat center. Schedules of attenders’ arrival times will be provided to help coordinate ride-sharing.

For more information on the Meeting, please contact the QEW office at <info@quakerearthcare.org>, telephone 802/658-0308.
