QEW presence at Gathering, Grennell, Iowa, July 4 - 8, 2011
Each year QEW hosts an Earthcare Center at the FGC Gathering to welcome Friends who share a concern for the earth and provide a place for them to network with others. The center is filled with books, videos and DVD’s, and activities for children. Staffed with volunteers to answer questions, the Center presents a series of afternoon workshops related to the local ecosystem and/or the theme of the Gathering.

Monday, July 4
3:15-4:15 --Welcome to the Earthcare Center
Learn about what is available in the center; help us get set up; meet QEW incoming clerk, Shelley Tanenbaum and QEW volunteers; learn about its mandate, mission and current focus on food. Find out about the program for the rest of the week.
4:30-5:30 Meet representatives from Scattergood School.
Learn what they are doing re food issues and what is going on locally. Brainstorm on how QEW and Quaker Schools can work more collaboratively together.
Tuesday, July 5
1:30-3:00 Genetically modified crops, the promises and perils
Discussion with Keith Helmuth, one of the authors of a newly published Quaker Institute for the Future (QIF) pamphlet on agricultural biotechnologies.
3:15-4:15 Video - The World According to Monsanto (90 min.); or Fresh? Other suggestions?
4:30-5:30 A brainstorming and discussion session on how QEW and QIF could work more collaboratively together
Wednesday, July 6
☼ In keeping with the FGC day of rest, we will offer a relaxing time at the Center. Come and talk about – and taste - local food. Come read, reflect, relax, watch some videos on sustainable food themes.
Thursday, July 7
1:30-3:00 Food, faith and friends with Wren Almitra.
Consider issues surrounding food justice and food choice. Explore ideas on how our meetings can foster food ethics and sustainable, just food choices.
3:15-4:15 Food, Forests and Plant Guilds: An Introduction to Permaculture with Carol Barta.
4:30-5:30 Meet with Ecological Quaker Action Team
Four Roles for Social Change with George Lakey.
Friday, July 8
1:30-3:00 Awakening the Dreamer, with Hollister Knowlton
Bringing forth an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, socially just human presence on the planet as the guiding principle of our time.
3:15-4:15 Video – During the week we will seek your views on which video from our collection we should show today.
4:30-5:30—How to get involved with QEW– until we meet again at FGC in 2012
Discussion led by QEW incoming clerk, Shelley Tanenbaum.
Early Morning Worship each will be convened by QEW Steering Committee members, Gail and John Fletcher.
